IS YOUR BODY “BIKINI READY?”
Summer is upon us and that means bathing suits and lots of fun in the sun! Are you ready? Or are you feeling like you’ve gained a few pounds since last year? Instead of dieting, which can have disastrous effects on your metabolism and may only generate temporary weight loss, it may be time to re-vamp your lifestyle.
You may think that you don’t have time to exercise or eat right, but cooking healthy doesn’t have to take a lot of time, and exercise should be an integral part of your day—something that is built into your plans. For those who exercise regularly, they actually miss it if they can’t do it for a few days! While there is a running debate on how much exercise someone needs, a good start would be 30 minutes 3- 4 times a week. Interval training is a good way to shed pounds and get in shape quickly. This involves “surprising” the body by changing exercises every few minutes from weights to cardio or by alternating levels of exertion.
As far as eating healthy, it’s vital that we feed the body plenty of nutrients, which means going back to consuming real food that’s unprocessed and free of chemicals. Chemicals weigh the body down and actually make you heavier! One of the worst offenders is diet soda! Think about it. Do you ever see a thin person drinking a diet coke? Studies have shown that diet soda makes people hungry so that they eat more. The artificial sweetener actually breaks down to either a formaldehyde type substance or PCB’s when it is ingested. The body surrounds the sweetener with fat and water to try to stop it from poisoning the rest of the body. So the person becomes heavier and can become more bloated too!
SPECIAL OFFER: If you need more direction in creating a healthier lifestyle, call us to schedule you a free 30-minute consultation today with Dr. Gena at 858-457-0191. ($120 value)

Beauty Kliniek Hosts “Pamper Me Pretty Party” for Parent Connection Board of Directors
Because our mission is to help build a stronger and healthier community by helping people achieve optimal health and well-being, we like to recognize other like-minded organizations in San Diego. Last week, we hosted the volunteer board of directors of the Parent Connection for all that they do to help empower parents and strengthen our community through family initiatives.
A non-profit parenting support group sponsored by Scripps Health, the Parent Connection brings San Diego families together to provide support, share experiences and information, enjoy social activities and build lasting relationships.
Since 1980 the Parent Connection, formerly known as Las Madres, has guided both first-time and seasoned parents through the maze of parenthood. More than 3,000 San Diego families belong to this organization, which includes parents in their 20s, 30s and 40s, married couples, singles, working parents and stay-at-home parents. Families with newborns, young children and children in their teens all find support through the Parent Connection.
The volunteer board of directors donates their time and effort to help provide the best possible programs to meet parents’ needs. Their programs are run by medical experts and marriage and family professionals who help guide members through the challenges of parenting whether it is getting your baby to sleep through the night, adjusting to parenthood, potty training or talking to your child about puberty.
Parent Connection hosts annual special events to help members socialize with other members. And their membership benefits include group discounts to California theme parks and attractions, which more than cover the cost of annual membership.
For more information on Parent Connection membership, please call (858) 626-6944.

Combating Adrenal Fatigue & Stress
When a person endures intense or prolonged stress, the body reacts negatively by overworking the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are two small glands that sit on top of the kidneys. These glands, also known as “stress glands” house several hormones that regulate different functions in the body – from handling stress, producing energy, digesting food, sleeping, maintaining normal moods and weight, menstrual cycles, fertility, sex drive and even handling pain. These glands also evoke the “fight or fight” response, which is the body’s reaction to any perceived threat, danger, change or stressful experience a person has to “survive” or overcome. When the brain perceives a threat, it activates an internal alarm system that trips this “fight or flight’ response. This response is a series of hormonal reactions in the body which tense up the muscles and draws blood away from the skin (causing you to feel chilly and goose bumps) and other organ systems your body isn’t using at the time (like reproductive or digestive organs) and redirects as much blood as possible to your muscles to help you fight harder or run faster. A “stressor” is the stimulus that elicits this “fight or flight” response. Examples of stressors include poor dietary choices, overwork, getting a bad grade on an exam, being unable to pay rent, being late for work, being unable to find your keys, a fight with your spouse, your child being sick, losing your job, losing a loved one and trying to avoid a car accident on the freeway.
Solutions to Combat Stress and Avoid Adrenal Fatigue:
• eat leafy greens daily or make green smoothies
• add more vegetables and fruits to your diet• eliminate refined and processed foods, especially
• avoid fast foods
• drink more water
• eliminate caffeine and nicotine (stimulants that overwork the adrenal glands)
• walk at the ocean
• meditate
• schedule time for a massage
• take a yoga or tai chi class
• spend time with someone you love or admire
• exercise daily
• treat yourself at the spa
Aromatherapy for adrenal fatigue:
A blend of essential oils of spruce, pine and rosemary in a carrier oil of grapeseed oil can be massaged over the lower back for energy.

Stroke, TIA and Warning Signs
This information is provided by the American Heart Association:
Stroke occurs when a blood vessel bringing blood and oxygen to the brain gets blocked or ruptures. When this happens, brain cells don’t get the blood that they need. Deprived of oxygen, nerve cells stop working and die within minutes. Then, the part of the body they control can’t function either. The effects of stroke may be permanent depending on how many cells are lost, where they are in the brain, and other factors.
Stroke is the No. 4 cause of death and a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in America.
What is a TIA?
TIA, or transient ischemic attack, is a “minor stroke” that occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery for a short time. The symptoms of a TIA are the same as those of a stroke, but they usually last only a few minutes. About 15 percent of major strokes are preceded by TIAs, so don’t ignore a TIA. Call 9-1-1 or seek emergency medical attention immediately!
Isn’t Stroke Hopeless?
No. Stroke is largely preventable. You can reduce your stroke risk by living a healthy lifestyle – controlling high blood pressure; not smoking; eating a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet; being physically active; maintaining a healthy body weight; managing diabetes; drinking moderately or not at all.
Also, much is being done to fight the effects of stroke. For example, the FDA approved use of the clot-dissolving drug tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) to treat stroke. This is an advance because tPA can stop a stroke in progress and reduce disability. But to be eligible for tPA, you must seek emergency treatment right away, because it must be given within 4.5 hours after symptoms start, and have a clot-caused stroke.
What are warning signs of stroke?
You and your family should recognize the warning signs of stroke. You may have some or all of these signs. Note the time when symptoms start and call 9-1-1 or the emergency medical number in your area. Stroke is a medical emergency!
Don’t ignore these warning signs, even if they go away. Timing is important. There are treatments that can be considered within 4.5 hours of the onset of symptoms.
Stroke Warning Signs:
• Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
• Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
• Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
• Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
• Sudden severe headache with no known cause
Before you need to take emergency action, find out where the emergency entrance is to your nearest hospital. Also, keep a list of emergency phone numbers next to your phone and with you at all times, just in case. Take these steps NOW!

Mama Said, "Take Out the Trash"
Do you have a “junk drawer” at home collecting useless items?
Your body also collects junk. This “junk” comes from the air you breathe, the water you drink and the foods you eat. It includes pesticides, heavy metals, chemicals, caffeine, pollution and preservatives.
It is the job of the kidneys, lungs, intestines, lymphatic system, colon and skin to filter this “junk,” or toxins, from the body. However, massive toxic exposure from today’s unhealthy diets, poor quality water, household cleaners and cosmetics makes it difficult for these systems to keep the body clean. The resulting toxic overload contributes to sluggishness, allergies, weight gain, fatigue, food cravings and mental fog.
To obtain optimal health, it is important to reduce this environmental “attack” on our bodies. We change our car’s air filter, oil filter and fuel filter to help it run optimally, but how can we help our bodies run optimally? Here are ways to help you “take out the trash:”
Manual Lymph Drainage Therapy
The lymphatic system, known as the “sewage system” of the body, removes bacteria, toxins and certain proteins from muscle tissues through a series of vessels and nodes located throughout the body to improve the metabolic environment for the body’s cells.
However, when proper lymph drainage does not occur, cells cannot receive nourishment, causing more toxic exposure and disease. To ensure proper lymph drainage, it is crucial to regularly do deep breathing, exercise and get lymph massage.
Manual lymph drainage (MLD) massage is one of the oldest treatments effective in removing toxins and cleansing tissues. The effects of MLD have been researched and studied by scientists and doctors for years. MLD calms the nervous system, helps to support the immune system, reduces swelling, helps to heal burns and decongests the tissues.
Colon Hydrotherapy
Constipation occurs when the transit time of toxic waste is slow. The longer the transit time the longer toxic waste sits in the bowels, which allows them to putrify, ferment and possibly be reabsorbed into the body. A toxic bowel can lead to disease. Colon hydrotherapy is a safe and effective method to detoxify the body by helping it eliminate waste in a safe, gentle and efficient manner.
Detoxification Program
Proven throughout history for physical, mental and spiritual rejuvenation, a regular cleansing program promotes healing; helps normalize weight, blood pressure and cholesterol; rebuilds the immune system and gives our bodies a physiological rest.
Infrared Sauna and Ionic Footbaths are also effective adjuncts to any detoxification program. The infrared sauna is more beneficial than conventional saunas as its dry heat produces more sweat as well as helps reduce pain and increase circulation.

To achieve optimal health, eat foods that are whole, pure and “alive” by adding more greens and raw, organic foods to your diet. Eating foods rich in enzymes will optimize digestion and elimination. Eliminate refined processed foods from your diet as they are “dead” and slow down elimination. Incorporate a regular cleansing program for renewed vitality and improved health. Lastly, laugh daily and surround yourself with positive people.

Top 10 Reasons to Eat Sprouts
1. They are biogenic, meaning they are alive and capable of transferring their life energy to your body.
2. They contain essential vitamins, proteins and minerals in their purest natural forms.
3. They provide the highest quality proteins, which are easy for the body to use, are low in fat and contain no saturated fat or cholesterol.
4. They provide a good source of fiber, which stimulates the body's internal self-cleansing abilities.
5. They slow the aging process as they are an excellent source of anti-oxidants.
6. They contain enzymes which aid in digestion and convert starches into sugars, protein into amino acids, and fats into fatty acids. Enzymes are destroyed in cooked food. When live enzymes are available, the body doesn't store unnecessary vitamin and mineral supplements.
7. They can provide you with a fresh garden in your kitchen when none other is available. Seeds can be stored economically for long periods of time with the potential of many times their weight in fresh produce.
8. They are simple, easy and fast to grow. You can have fresh sprouts in 2 to 4 days instead of 30 to 90 days needed to grow most vegetables.
9. They can be eaten alone, or in salads, sandwiches, soups, stir fry, pancakes, bread or just about anything.
10. They are the missing link to daily nutrition and home food storage programs.

15 Guidelines for a Healthy Body Today!
Do you suffer from two or more of the following symptoms?
• Wake up tired
• Feeling tired all the time
• Inability to think clearly
• Loss of sexual vigor or interest
• Feel lethargic
• Feel bloated and swollen
• Feeling stressed
• Recent weight gain
Now answer these questions:
• Do you have enthusiasm for life?
• Would you like to feel more positive, happy and confident?
• Would you like to feel vibrant and have more energy?
• Would you like to have a strong immune system?
We all have the power to improve our health and have a better quality of life. In fact, we make choices every day that contribute to the way we feel. The foods we eat are crucial to our overall well-being so our health depends on the kinds of food choices we make. Food can either be your medicine to help build your body up or it can be your poison and contribute to tearing your body down. Unfortunately, so much of the food we eat is nutritionally deficient. And as they say, we are what we eat, assimilate and eliminate.
Also, our thoughts are powerful enough to affect the way our day will go. It is important to think positive thoughts and direct our attention to what we would like to manifest into our lives, rather than focus on what is wrong or what we do not have in our lives. Being consumed with negative thoughts or having chronically high stress levels also affects our body, our health and our overall well-being.
15 Guidelines to Help You Maintain and Improve Your Health Today:
1. Eat Vegetables, Fruits, Legumes, and Whole Grains
Vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains are the best foods to nourish your brain, build immunity and improve your health. Vegetables are also abundant in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber that strengthen the immune system thereby contributing to your health and vitality.
2. Eat Good Quality Lean Protein
Protein should contribute to about 25% of your diet. Quality choices are lean poultry, fish, eggs, yogurt, beans, tofu and grains.
3. Consume Healthy Fats
Omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFA’s), found in cold-water fish, salmon, trout, mackerel and flaxseed have been shown to support breast and colon health as well as healthy blood cholesterol levels. Flax seeds are also an excellent source of fiber to support your colon and maintain regularity.
4. Avoid Bad Fats
Animal fats, hydrogenated fats, and processed oils do not do the body good!
5. Eliminate Refined Carbohydrates
Sugar, processed foods and refined carbohydrates rob the body of nutrients, contributing to a sluggish system and a lack of energy.
6. Juice Daily
Prepare organic vegetable juices on a daily basis. Juicing helps gives you an amazing source of energy and stamina and helps to prevent disease. Freshly squeezed juice provides "live" nutrients and enzymes, which boosts your energy and helps to digest food properly.
7. Reduce or Eliminate Caffeine
Reduce the caffeine in your daily regimen. Caffeine is a stimulant that triggers the “fight-or-flight” response to stress and overwork the adrenal glands that govern the stress hormone cortisol. It is best to avoid coffee, tea, cola, chocolate and other foods and beverages containing caffeine as its consumption provides a false sense of energy.
8. Drink Water
It is important to drink about 6-10 glasses of good drinking water daily. Water is necessary to hydrate the body to help metabolism, promote good digestion, keep the skin in good condition and energize the body.
9. Exercise Regularly
Regular exercise is a fundamental part of any healthy lifestyle. It is important to exercise at least four times a week, for 30-45 minutes and work up a sweat. This will support the proper functioning of your heart and cardiovascular system, digestion and elimination, strengthening the bones and builds lean muscle mass which increases metabolism and keeps the body at a healthier weight. Regular exercise will also provide you renewed energy and endurance.
10. Meditate
To reduce stress, meditate, do yoga or Tai Chi or deep relaxation exercises for 20 minutes a day to center the mind, lower your blood pressure and boost your immunity.
11. Get Regular Massage
Massage is proven to reduce stress and tension by releasing endorphins which flood your body promoting relaxation.
12. Breathe Right
Good health and vitality is increased with breath work. Most of us breathe with only 10% of our lungs. Breath work will help to enhance your sense of inner peace.
13. Take Time Out for Yourself
Remember that you are the most important person and that you deserve to be taken care of. Take time out of every day to do something pleasurable for yourself. Read a book, walk by the ocean or garden.
14. Find Humor in Life
A good laugh triggers the release of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that produce feelings of euphoria. It also suppresses the production of cortisol, a hormone released when you're under stress that indirectly raises blood pressure by causing your body to retain salt. So try to find humor in daily life.
15. Visualize Prosperity
Truly believe and feel that you are going to have an incredible day. You will be surprised how you will manifest this thought!
Follow these simple guidelines and you will increase the quality of your life. Remember that Health and Vitality is a daily choice!
